Recent signees to the Jealous Records stable, 'Some Girls' is the first single by Glasweigan sextet Dananananaykroyd. The song begins with bright guitars that jump around while the faint sound of equally bright gang vocals can be heard in the background. The drums drop in at 30 paces and the melodies begin to weave in and out before the guitars go angular and the feed back kicks in recalling MacCaye, Picciotto and co circa Repeater 1990. When the bottom drops out of the music and a slight bit of sliding on the pickboard can be heard at the three minute mark, one might content themselves knowing that they've heard a three minute pop single with SUBSTANCE - but no - before you catch a moment to replace the needle at the beginning of the record, there's a long free flow of words as the music picks up and chugs along for an additional minute and a half before a final twenty seconds of feed back (trying to live up to that 1991: Year That Punk Broke influence eh lads and lass?) and a sharp end.
B side 'Genuine LB's' is a 2 for 2 with a swaying guitar line and a pop melody every bit as catchy as Pavement (and really, even on a bad day for Pavement, that's batting above average).
Only into their second year of existence (the band is still in its infancy really, having only formed last January), Dananananaykroyd show lots of potential with this single and it'll be interesting to see what new entry they may make into the pop music dictionary by year's end!
