Dear Conrad - How does dressing "punk" or whatever offend God? I mean, in a church leadership role I can see how it might offend some people, but does God really not like kids with mohawks and weird colored hair? The reason I ask; my friend, a girl, she dresses "punk" with chains and this and that, and her parents down her and say stuff like "Who do you represent?" Can we offend God? I’m sure if we dress like we're ready for a photo shoot in some girly magazine God might not like that, but punk or the "rock and roll look" is frowned upon by God? – antipop
Dear Antipop,
The punk dressing is fine in and of itself BUT there is more than the issue of dress in that situation.
Here's is the verse that applies...
EX 20:12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
There is a matter of submitting to parents. If her parents tell her she can't dress like that, dressing punk will be wrong - NOT because dressing punk is a sin - but she will be dishonoring her parents.
If it's a preference thing to them and they just say stuff like "I think you'd look better in J Crew, but dress how you like." Then she can still dress punk. If her punkness dishonors her parents - then she should stop and honor her parents.
