Dear Conrad - I've read a lot of the questions and answers submitted in this section of Decapolis. One thing that I always question though is when you refer to sin and sinning. You say "We all sin everyday - Christians and non-Christians.” I know in Romans Chapter 6 though, that it says that I am no longer a slave to sin because I am alive to Christ. I know the difference in living in sin and committing sin, but if I'm walking in the spirit man I'm not going to sin, unless I step back into the flesh, or the carnal man. Could you please explain what you mean when you say we're going to sin everyday? -- Johnny C.
Dear Johnny C,
Good question. Let’s start that the beginning. We have the sinful nature before the spiritual nature. In that sinful nature we are slaves to sin (Rom 6:6, 7:18). All we can do is sin (Heb 11:6). But as you said - Christ makes us no longer slaves to sin (Rom 6:6). We are now no longer bound to it. We are able to do good. But notice the Bible does not say, the sinful nature is now gone from us completely. But in fact the new nature and old nature are side by side.
RO 7:21 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. [22] For in my inner being I delight in God's law; [23] but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. [24] What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? [25] Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord!
