You would think the best thing to happen to the Kaiser Chiefs was the global response to their debut, Employment. After all, the five piece rock act from Leeds simply blew up after their 2005 debut, with the album reaching multi-platinum status worldwide along with heaps of critical praise.
But that doesn't seem to be the case. Armed this time around with a bit of indie cred, the band sounds both tired and tepid on Yours Truly, Angry Mob - a CD that sounds completely off from its in-your-face title. Perhaps vocalist Ricky Wilson assumed that throwing a bit of social commentary throughout the album would bring some grit and bombasity to the table, but that would be a mistake.
It's not that Yours Truly is a bad album. In fact, it's quite decent. It's just that Kasier Chiefs seemed poised to make the same leap that other indie darlings like Bloc Party and Arcade Fire have made with their sophomore efforts. Instead, they are content to hold on tightly to what they've already achieved. With producer Stephen Street back again, the band made sure to reintroduce fans to their catchy melodies, fist-raising anthems, and straightforward strut-rock without offering anything else.
In the end, it seems Kaiser Chiefs just felt tired although they seem led to believe they're kicking in the door on all of us. While Yours Truly, Angry Mob is still an enjoyable effort, fans will surely be disappointed for what could have been.
