Listening to Beauty and the Breakdown draws comparisons from artists like Demon Hunter or Slipknot. Only without the tongue-in-cheek aspects of Demon Hunter or the raw intrigue of Slipknot. Which spells disaster, almost.
The thing that, as a reviewer, saves this album from a one-way ticket to a sub-one star rating is, despite the complete lack of talent or originality displayed here, Bury Your Dead has mastered the art of a catchy chorus. Amid the drop-D sludging and hoarsely shouted vocals, which tend to make the songs blur into one another and shows the album to be little more than one long song, plateaus appear. The choruses sound epic, even though they’re formulaic, both from one song to another and from one band to another.
I could see these songs translating well into a live setting. A pit of kids swarming, everyone shouting the lyrics they memorized (or pretend they have memorized.) However, when looked at as an album, there just isn’t too much to endear itself to anyone who isn’t more than a casual listener of music. It is just sad when the main thing that separates yourself from other comparable musicians is what you lack. Only recommended for people who only listen to nu metal.
