Prior to this I had heard a lot about Coheed to Cambria, but never actually listened to them. Generally the impression that I had was held up by listening to “The Second Stage Turbine Blade,” which is a re-release of their first album.
The music is fairly easy to listen to with the guitars having the proper amount of distortion and the mix of all the instruments such that nothing sticks out too much. The vocals blend well with everything, though lack any kind of edge (which prevents them from falling into much screaming, thankfully.) The song composition is ok, though nothing great or jaw dropping.
What they really did right was song introductions. Most of the tracks have these great little intros which, to someone with my kind of musical taste, is a double edged sword. These little intros are very tasty and each time I hope that they might offer hints to what the rest of the song will bring. Unfortunately I am always disappointed when the intro is just that: an introduction. The intro is nothing that is then really a part of the song.
If Coheed and Cambria on their other two releases (or any future ones) stopped limiting the interesting creativity to introductions and used that same mentality throughout an entire song I would probably really enjoy them. This cd is merely ok, and listenable only because nothing sticks out as being bad. If you’re fond of the genre this cd might save your life. But I don’t quite hear the genius people claim is here.
