What a ripping farewell they have left us with.
The blue-collar grime of DC always came through in Shelby Cinca’s metallic and barbwire sharp riffing. His vocals were obviously influenced by Mackaye but [gasp] are more urgent. Take a listen to We Are The Virus where Cinca reprises lyrics from Decahedron’s only LP, Disconnection Imminent: “mission control/mind control/control”.
The Armageddon-sci-fi theme and lyrics carried over from Frodus has always given the band a context unlike so many others in DC who seem to be merely repeating in an ad-lib fashion what has been said countless times by better performers. Decahedron have always been sonically confronting and when you meld that with thoughts of the future they create a sense of unease, one kept at by Jake Brown’s incessant bass lines.
Epic by their standards is the final track, Ageless. While it sounds markedly different from the five tracks that precede it, Ageless closes the album and the band in a completely appropriate fashion. Jason Hamacher delivers a throbbing spine while Cinca and Brown play with electronics and vocal effects. It’s a spooky and bleak song wrapped over by yearning vocals and high-pitched synths.
If only the world was big enough to support the immense talent of Decahedron.
