Exene Cervenka is nothing short of prolific. She’s an original member of the extremely influential punk band X. Her visual art has been in museum exhibitions. Books of poetry are graced with her name on the cover. She’s even involved with the country music act, The Knitters.
Considering all of that it’s not too surprising that “Sev7en” sounds like what might happen if Kim Gordon (of Sonic Youth) met up with a punk rock band with a rockabilly infatuation. But while rockabilly generally leaves a negative impression in my mind, Cervenka adds more than enough spark and punk rock attitude to keep the rockabilly from overpowering.
The only distraction for this album is the production. It leaves the album sounding like demos instead of a finished product. But the songs are strong enough to still make this an interesting and engaging listen.
