Gunmetal Grey is that local band who plays every other hardcore and metal show. They are the one that is good enough live to have a decent following of fans besides their girlfriends. When Slayer comes to town, they will be the second band the promoter calls to open for them if the first band on the list says no.
To paraphrase and butcher a Douglas Adams concept for an analogy where “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” calls Earth, compared to the rest of the universe “Mostly harmless,” Gunmetal Grey is also harmless when compared to the rest of the musical world. To see the world through Adams’ fictional character Ford Prefect’s eyes Earth isn’t the most exciting planet in the galaxy, however, it was still a nice little place.
Gunmetal Grey are just nice. They aren’t tight or exceptionally creative, but that doesn’t stop them from cranking out some ok metal your grandmother could mosh to at a concert. “Solitude” probably won’t win them any fans outside of their home town, especially considering that it is doubtful whether the little indie label will be able to distribute them beyond Gunmetal Grey’s local independent record stores. Only get this if you see and are impressed with their live show. Otherwise you will end up paying too much for a cd that is merely “nice.”
