The Horrorpops return with their second proper record of psychobilly/punk pop ditties. The band made quite a stir with “Hell Yeah!” and “Bring It On!” will probably make an even bigger stir because the band has written some really catchy songs this time around. Plus they have gogo dancers. Everyone loves gogo dancers dressed like they were at a Misfits concert right?
While I’m sure many will be tempted to write this band off right away because of their look and name, you’d be missing out on some seriously talented musicians. While the show is great, the musicianship is excellent. “You vs. Me” and “Freaks in Uniform” are both expertly played and as accessible as they come. The band has a real knack for blending the best elements of the 50’s with the new millennium, a great example being the doo wop punk of “Walk Like a Zombie.”
The Horrorpops may not being changing the world but they sure are making it a lot of fun to live in. This album has a broad appeal and a huge sound to it that I think will resonate with nearly any fan of ska, punk, psychobilly, or any other style of fringe music but will also find a nice home on the radio without anyone crying “sellout.”
