The debut album by Hurt, out of Virginia, pretty much seems to pick up where Creed left off a few years ago. Self described on their website as having songs with "Traces of Tool, Nirvana, and mid-period Metallica", I'd compare them more to the aforementioned Creed, with maybe some harder elements reminiscent of Disturbed instead. There are some obvious negative feelings towards religion and upbringing, which shine through here and there throughout the album. That seems to be the popular topic these days with rock bands. Hey, if it's your thing, great. I never got it.
Musically, the album doesn't stand out as an overwhelmingly good outing, although it is far from weak also. The band does include some well placed string arrangements in a few of the songs, which nicely accents the songs.
While I don't think Hurt will be selling out arenas any time soon (they're currently on tour with Staind and Three Days Grace), they won't do badly either in the popular music world. They have enough of a good thing going for the MtV crowd that they could gain some momentum with some video or radio-play exposure. Aside from all that, let's face it: kids are always looking for a straight-up, ballchain choker wearing, leather wristband toting band to pick up the 'rocker' slack that has been left behind over the last few years.
