Jesse Daniels has been mulling around for a bit now as an independent artist. Since hearing her last EP and seeing her perform at a GMA showcase a couple of year’s back I have been a firm believer that she has something great to offer music. Her Midas Records self-titled debut proves that she in fact does.
First off, this is not an ultra-creative poetry filled kind of album. It’s a rock album. Its radio friendly, it’s positive, and when you listen to the songs you feel good about yourself. So if that is not your thing or you prefer to regurgitate the terrible things that have happened to you throughout your life, than this album probably isn’t for you.
The thing that strikes me most about Daniels is how strong her voice is. It’s very comparable to Kelly Clarkson in that respect. She really can do a lot with it, much more other artists of her genre. Throughout this album you get the feeling that she has just got a handle on her voice and she is exploring the possibilities. The first single, and album kickoff, “The Noise” is easily the highlight, particularly in regards to her voice. She jumps back and forth between poppy alt-rock and a downright wail and it sounds great. “Hold Me Now” is a powerful piano based ballad that eventually, predictably, builds into a more anthemic song. As predictable as it is, Daniels vocal shines. Other highlights include the back to back “What I Hear” and the album’s tried and true rocker “Hello/Goodbye.”
Jesse Daniels delivers on this album plain and simple. Fans of great female fronted rock will fall completely in love with this album. Daniels sings with a lot of passion and the album is musically just enough to push her above the stagnant waters of big budget radio rock.
