People Chasing People are a four-piece post-rock band from Tallahassee, FL. Not happy with their geographic location the band decided to relocate to DC but not before they would record their debut full-length, “The Dayglow Light Of Sleep.” Their bio boasts that this record “is a testament to the fact that melody and musical complexity can compliment one another” and does a good job at describing what People Chasing People is trying to convey.
“The Dayglow Light Of Sleep” is chock full of catchy independent rock songs in the vein of early Dismemberment Plan material. Its songs like “You Are Loved” and “Break The Itty-Bittys” that grab you with their start-stop guitar parts at times reminiscent of early The Get Up Kids but with but with an odder song structure. It seems like this is People Chasing People’s penchant: write awkward somewhat complex songs that also have a keen pop sensibility. “Yelling At Cops” employs clean picking parts with minimal drums parts on the chorus and a well thought out bass line. The ethereal “A Sailor” showcases tight vocal harmonies over dual clean guitars while “Willow” utilizes danceable drum parts reminiscent of Soul Coughing. “One Cool Astronaut” is onslaught of distorted guitars and the funky “Fire Burns” is definitely a change of pace for PCP with its aggressive vocal take.
“The Dayglow Light Of Sleep” is beguiling but sometimes too awkward or complex for its own good. The lyrics are too intangible to grab a hold of throughout much of the record and the times where PCP does not employ a melodic hook it feels stale. Still this is a fairly strong debut that teeters the line between intricate and melodic.
