Sinking Ships is one of the new hardcore outfits to a label that used to be THE hardcore label but has slipped over the past years...but they seem to be getting back on track. I talk of Revelation Records. They also have signed fellow Pacific North westerners, The Shook Ones, Long Island's Capital and Richmond, VA's Down To Nothing. Sinking Ship is exactly what you would expect from a PNW hardcore outfit. They play energetic melodic hardcore with catchy riffs and a healthy portion of sing alongs.
Revelation seems determined to bring back their hardcore fan base. They released the Bold and Judge discographies and are in works for a Chain Of Strength package. They put together/supported the Gorilla Biscuits reunion. They re-released Shai Hulud's first two albums. They released the Generations comp featuring Sinking Ships, Blacklisted, Internal Affairs, Righteous Jams, Go It Alone and others. They signed Capital, Sinking Ships, Shook Ones and Down To Nothing. They have released or are in plans of releasing something from all of these bands in the next months.
Sinking Ships is a great starting point. It's a solid hardcore album. I don't think it will blow anyone's mind and it's not starting anything new but it's just a solid album. It features the guest vocals of Scott Freeman (Shook Ones) on the best track of the album The Next Time I Go. It also features Jim Hesketh (brother of lead singer Danny Hesketh and former lead singer of Champion). Unlike Champion, you won't really find the positivity and straightedge anthems here. You will mostly find lyrics of being lost and trying to find friends/losing friends. I guess feeling of disconnection from the world, large and small.
If you are fans of Champion, Stay Gold and Comeback Kid, you will probably love this album. I can't stand Comeback Kid and I love Disconnecting.
