Wow is this a frantic album! The Fall of Troy seems to rush through every song at full speed with hysterical vocals at most times, and an occasionally sung vocal. Doppelgänger contains mostly older songs from Fall of Troy’s older catalogue, four re-recorded from their first full length and three from a demo. The four new songs are enjoyable, as most of the album is. Their sound can be imagined if The Blood Brothers and Mars Volta had a baby and somehow added some pop elements and you have The Fall of Troy.
Somehow, The Fall of Troy is a three piece. They have such a big sound that is full of grooving bass lines and skillful guitar solos. It is common in the album for their to be spontaneous changes, breakdowns and the casual long build towards an amazing climactic moment, only to start over again. Melodic poppy moments, metallic technical sounds and hardcore breakdowns along with odd transitions and shrieks and even danceable moments make up much of the album. Ridiculous song titles like, “Laces Out, Dan!,” “We Better Learn to Hotwire a Uterus” and “Whacko Jacko Steals the Elephant Man's Bones” are commonplace, and honestly fit the album perfectly. The sillyness of the overall sound of the band makes them very enjoyable and fun.
This is one of the most creative releases of the year, but it’s biggest fault is that there aren’t enough moments for a breather, its just so fast and it weighs down on one’s ears with the constant fast pace movement that you have a head ache by the end. The creativity and fun outweigh this aftereffect, making Doppelgänger in the end a great release.
