Artist: Trespassers William Album: Having Label: Nettwerk Records Tracks: 11 Review By: Jacob “Sweet n Low” Gehman
“Having” may just have one of the most beautiful album covers I have ever seen. It’s a great intersection of nature and the warmth of home with an Autumn flavor. Although it is a picture from outside of the building, it is still very inviting and draws you in. Quite mesmerizing.
So it is kind of sad for me to report that I don’t find the music enclosed with it to be quite as interesting. The album seems to flow at one set speed, without much variety in the vocal delivery or the way instruments are presented. While Trespassers William has a more mainstream sound and actually sings words, I could see them appealing to fans of Sigur Ros, another band who lets their songs slowly unfold, relying more on the creating of atmosphere than the creation of energy.
The atmosphere actually reminds me of the season autumn. There is a feeling of conclusions and the long delayed inevitable to the tone. Autumn is the season of ending. Many people really like spring and summer, but autumn is a sign that winter can’t be too long behind. Despite the bright flowers on the cover, it still has that “tucked in and waiting for the first blizzard while sipping wassail” feel to it. Making fall a great time to listen to “Having.”
“Having” is well performed and an overall quality piece of work. It’s not one that I will think to break out often, though the next time the leaves turn brown and start tumbling to the ground I’ll consider it. I’m sure that the sort of reader who enjoys bands who create atmosphere will find this a great addition to their collection.
